He then "decided to remove the mattress from her cell as a result of her aggressive behavior." Gardner began punching and kicking, so he struck her three times, describing the blows as "closed fist strikes" to her head and face. He noticed that her lip was bleeding and had dispatchers call EMS. The attorney for Gardner said the video does not show Gardner kicking or punching the officers and that the report is a cover-up.Westland Police Chief Alan Ramsden said he didn't have the facts of the case before him so he couldn't comment on what happened. He said it is not department procedure to remove mattresses as a form of discipline.
